Ceaușescu: The West's favourite communist who ended up executed

Nicolae Ceaușeșcu (1918-1989), Romanian politician and president, started as a young man in the then illegal Communist Party and ended up in prison for two and a half years. And not for the first time... However, his prison contacts helped him on his way to power. He became a deputy minister of agriculture and later deputy minister of the Armed Forces, which made him the second man in the country for 11 years. In 1965, he become the party's general secretary and de facto ruler of the country. Because of his foreign policy, he was described as the most popular communist in the West. But then he visited China and North Korea and a cold shower comes - both in the power-building cult of personality and Ceausescu's stigma, and the economic disaster that Romania was inexorably approaching - it became one of the poorest countries in Europe and the people revolted. Despite bloody protests, Ceaușeșcu was not able to withstand the onslaught. He and his wife fled from the angry mob in a helicopter, but were caught and, after a short trial, executed by firing squad. What was satisfying for many Romanians was rather embarrassing abroad...
