Stay tuned to the end for a chance to win a prize! When you’re starting out as a filmmaker, you hear all about what not to do when it comes to lighting. Of all the things people will tell you NOT to do, many of them could still work in a scene - depending on the situation or the limitations while shooting. However, some things will look bad no matter how or when they’re used. Today on 4 Minute Film School, we’re going to show you three lighting mistakes you should always avoid and how to fix each one. In this video, Matt from the A-Team shows us what each of these lighting mistakes looks like, and a few approaches to fixing each one. First he sets up the shot and takes a look at the lighting. Then he identifies what about the lighting isn’t looking good in the scene, and what he can change by adjusting the lighting. Lastly he either adds lights, takes away lights, or moves the lights already in the scene in order to fix the lighting mistakes from the original setup. The main aspects addressed in this video are exposure, eye lights, and background separation. Exposure refers to the brightness of a light in relation to the sensitivity of the camera. You want the light to fall within the range of information that the camera can record. Eye lights are lights that reflect in the actor’s eye. If you don’t have an eye light, the eyes can look dead and hollow. Background separation refers to anything that keeps the subject from blending into the background. This can be highlights, contrast, or even depth of field. There are plenty of ways you can make your lighting look better. As cinematographers we do our best to have as few lighting mistakes in our work as possible. Sometimes those are easy to fix, and sometimes they’re more difficult. Being able to identify lighting mistakes and fix them quickly will make your work so much better. Just make sure the story comes first. Sometimes what would usually be considered as a lighting mistake is exactly what you need for the story.
