A classic situation experienced by patients is continued groin pain after a hernia repair. Mr Marsh talks about mis-diagnosis and why the groin pain continues after surgery. Mr Marsh says he is more and more frequently seeing people who have had a 'sports hernia' repair using a plastic mesh, which has not solved their pain. Usually these patients will say there was never a lump in the groin or lower abdomen and they will describe the typical gilmores groin symptoms. So they have had a hernia repair, where there was no hernia and the disrupted groin and abdominal muscles are still not attached. So what happens is a second operation to remove the mesh and repair the disrupted muscles, which is actually a more complicated procedure than the original operation. 90% of the time this will work effectively and people do return to sport, although it may take longer.
