Woodturning a rather extreme bowl out of a half silver birch log is super fun, but you must take care due to its orientation and the possibility of a catch. Once it was mounted on my woodturning lathe, I spun the lathe slowly and removed small amounts of material at a time. The final bowl was sanded up to 320 grit, and I applied some mineral oil to enhance the grain and provide protection to the wood.
