On May 25, 1963, the Organization of African Unity (OAU) was established in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with 32 African nations as signatories. Spearheaded by leaders like Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, the OAU aimed to promote political and economic integration among member states and to eradicate colonialism and neo-colonialism from the African continent. Despite challenges such as limited enforcement capabilities and internal divisions, the OAU played a pivotal role in supporting liberation movements and fostering a sense of unity across Africa. In 2002, it was succeeded by the African Union (AU), which continues to uphold many of the founding principles of the OAU.
