Outsiders in Syria: The Responsibility of Filmmaking

Our latest filmmaking trip took us to Damascus, Syria, into Yarmouk refugee camp—once a thriving hub for the Palestinian diaspora, now largely destroyed by war. There, we met Khaldoun, a doctor who stayed through the entire siege, treating fighters from all sides. His experience was one of survival. Ours, as filmmakers, was that of outsiders—seeing this world through a lens but never truly living it. In this behind-the-scenes video, we reflect on two vastly different perspectives: the insider who lived through it and the outsiders navigating it through the filmmaking process. Filmmaking in places like this isn’t about what you think you know—it’s about embracing what you don’t. Real learning begins by freeing yourself up to the fact you know nothing.
