Ky. Down syndrome dancers compete, break barriers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB/CNN Newsource/WKRC) - Foot tapping... hand clapping... hip-swaying music filters through a makeshift studio where two dozen dancers step to the beat of today's biggest hits. With each move, the members of the "Boogie Down Crew" dance to break down barriers associated with Down syndrome. "I've heard we are the most fun dance crew in Louisville," said coach and choreographer Carly Stotts. Part of Down syndrome of Louisville, the group includes members from Kentucky and Indiana. Their youngest is 11 and their oldest is 60 years young- each with a smile bigger than the next and a passion for moving. "It's really amazing because they don't care about the steps," said Stotts. "They care about expressing themselves and having a good time and the steps are just there." Stotts took over the team two years ago. What started as a way for members to get some exercise has taken on a life of its own. Each song has specific choreography that dancers pick up immediately and perform with enthusiasm. "They will follow me to the ends of the Earth," said Stotts. "They will follow anything and they do pick it up and they are so willing to try. That's the coolest thing about it." She's pushed the group to perform throughout the area, sharing the stage with professionals at Shakespeare in the Park... where they refused to be upstaged. "Our final song, half the audience was on stage dancing with us," said Stotts. "And I think most of them had never heard of Down syndrome of Louisville, so that's a huge thing for me to help spread awareness of people with Down syndrome." It's an inclusive environment, where everyone tries their hardest... dropping moves and removing the stigma associated with disabilities. A dance troupe where nothing is off limits, every one is capable and they dance like everyone is watching.
