Plutarch has described it as the city built of love and destroyed by hatred. King Pyrrhus built it around 290 BC in honor of his his wife Antigone, the princess of Egypt. It was later destroyed by the Romans, as punishment for the alliance of the Epirots with Macedonia, against Rome. The Acropolis was located at the highest point of the hill. Today the mosaic of a Paleo-Christian church can also be seen here.
