Chapter 6 in a series of lectures corresponding to the book "Physical Principles of Quantum Biology" in which Dr. Nathan Babcock lays out the quantum mechanical foundations for study and further research in the area of quantum biology. This lecture delves into the inner workings of the DNA repair enzyme photolyase. Main topics include the structural and functional properties of the photolyase / cryptochrome family of proteins, functional elements of DNA photolyase enzymes, essential steps in the DNA repair cycle, non-covalent interactions and DNA recognition, classical and quantum search models for finding and detecting DNA lesions, protein-solvent control of catalytic redox dynamics and the flavin photo-reduction cycle, quantum control of electron transfer for DNA repair (including magnetically-sensitive radical pair dynamics), flavin and antenna chromophores, tryptophan photo-physics, photocatalytic optimization, experimental methods, and biomedical and biotechnological implications of photo-enzyme research. The lecture provides a general overview of the mechanistic framework that is used to model the quantum control of ultrafast molecular dynamics in photolyase.
