In this episode, Octavia takes a look at Cation Exchange Capacity. Soil is made up of a combination of organic matter and mineral particles. The mineral particles are split into three distinct groups based on size: sand, silt and clay. Every soil has a different composition; some have more clay, some more sand. But it’s the unique blend of these components that determines the properties of soil – this is termed soil texture. In this video, we talk about the unique properties of clay; the fact that it has a huge surface area and that fact that the particles are usually negatively charged, and how this has relevance to plant biology.
