Tricotism

Jazz bassist, cellist, and composer Oscar Pettiford was born in 1922 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. He, along with his parents and ten brothers and sisters, performed as the Pettiford Family Band. His mother taught music theory to the family and he sang and danced, often with a baton, to entertain. Although they performed standard popular music, they preferred their own original compositions. Pettiford would go on to teach himself the upright bass with a distinct approach of viewing it as a melodic instrument, a unique viewpoint evident in his many compositions. He performed with such notable jazz musicians as Duke Ellington, Charlie Barnet, Coleman Hawkins, and Dizzy Gillespie. Although he passed on just three weeks shy of his thirty-eighth birthday, Pettiford’s contribution to jazz, in particular the bebop genre, remains a lasting legacy. Tricotism is a bebop style work, challenging the performer with a key of five flats and virtuosic, yet melodic, bass lines.
