Well, after two years, the numbers are in, and they are not good. This week in Parliament, Jeremy Hanson MLA, showed that: • Heroin use is up 30% • Meth use is up 40% • Cocaine use is up 70% • Drug driving is up • Drug-related hospital presentations are up • And now, Canberra has the highest rate of drug overdoses in the country We in the Canberra Liberals have been raising concerns about Labor’s ideological campaign on decriminalising hard drugs for years. Where this experiment was tried elsewhere, it has failed. It increased drug use, increased local crime, and made cities less safe. And that’s exactly what is happening here in Canberra. But you don’t need the statistics to know it’s happening. You can see it in Garema Place and the City bus interchange, you can see it in places like Dickson Village and Emu Bank, and you can even see it when you have to dodge the syringes at the playground in Coombs. Our town centres and suburbs are less safe now because Labor decriminalised hard drugs. You are not alone in worrying about crime and safety in your community. The Canberra Liberals pushed to repeal the drug decriminalisation that has made our city less safe. But Labor, the Greens, and the independents teamed up to vote it down. Which means the Liberals are the only party who are honest about the impact drug decriminalisation is having on our city. You deserve a government that is honest about the challenges we face. You deserve a government that prioritises the safety of your family. Thank you.
