Inspired by our "HK Wasteland" video we set out to find alternatives for single-use plastic water bottles. Kishu Charcoal is an activated carbon found in the Kishu region of Japan. For centuries, Japanese artisans have been sustainably harvesting oak branches in fired handmade outdoor ovens. After many days of continuous, closely monitored carbonization to over 1000 degrees, the branches transform into a hard, glass-like material —known as activated carbon or Binchō-tan (備長炭) in Japanese. The high heating temperatures followed by a rapid cooling process carbonize the oak making it 97% carbon. This pure form of carbon is extremely porous allowing it to absorb impurities (LEAD, MERCURY, COPPER, ALUMINUM, URANIUM, and MOLYBDENUM) while imparting important minerals (Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium).
