Growing Apple & Fig Trees in San Diego Plus My Top 3 FAVORITE Fruits To Grow

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” Fruit trees are one of the most rewarding things to have in your garden, and they're one of the hottest topics. Consider temperatures (both highs and lows), moisture, soil, sunlight, etc. Also think about what you can already get at the store (or maybe swap with neighbors) and your harvest periods. Let's kick things off looking at my fig tree. It's December so it doesn't look all that great this time of year since it's done giving fruit. It's losing its leaves right now, but this is a great tree for growers in zones 9 and 10. Fig trees do exceptionally well in Southern California, especially San Diego because they're from a similar climate in the Mediterranean. They're also very tough, and they give SO MUCH fruit. They don't require much water either! On my other side, we have a Pink Lady apple tree. Even though we rarely get into the 30s and won't see a snowflake fall anywhere around us, apples and stone fruits can be grown here. These types of fruit trees require a certain number of chill hours (between 32 and 45 degrees) to set their fruit, but there are varieties that need fewer chill hours. This is why it's so important to know your micro-climate. We typically get less than 200 chill hours per year. For growers here in San Diego that love juicy peaches or sweet plums, you CAN grow these fruits, but you'll need to be aware of the requirements for your chosen variety. Gardeners in different parts of San Diego County (Ramona, Alpine, Julian, etc.) will have a higher number of chill hours than those of us closer to downtown or the water. I definitely recommend checking out your local nursery! They will know - and carry - the varieties of trees that will do well in your yard. How about some other of my favorite fruit trees to grow?
