So you trapped a skunk, now what? This client was trapping for a groundhog with their own trap and captured a skunk. Some homeowners are comfortable trapping and handling squirrels, raccoons, and groundhogs, but draw the line at skunks! The homeowner called us to handle and remove the skunk and I thought it would be a great opportunity to demonstrate how we handle and remove skunks. The number 1 thing to remember when dealing with a skunk in a trap is to move slowly and calmly and to speak to the skunk to let them know you are there. This is because skunks do not have great eyesight, so by speaking to the skunk, you are letting them know you are there and minimize the chance that they get scared and spray. In this case, the trap has a solid metal front door so we approach the trap from the front to provide additional cover if they do decide to spray. Speak and move calmly and slowly as you approach the trap to make the skunk feel at ease. Gently cover the trap with a towel, blanket, tarp, or whatever you have handy. Do not throw the cover over the trap as this may scare the skunk and they may spray. Once the trap is covered, you can move the trap. The trap will probably be much heavier as skunks tend to excavate a lot of soil and bring the soil into the trap. Make sure the trap is closed and latched so you don't have a skunk escape during transport. Prudential Pest Solutions is a full service wildlife and pest control company.
