May 9, 2024 - From http://KTVU.com Through Re-entry and Support Services, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) provides incarcerated individuals with opportunities and wrap-around services at the Santa Rita Jail that yield life-changing results. An example of the great work happening under Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez’s leadership is the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) – Local 304 – vocational program. The dedication of ACSO personnel assigned to Santa Rita Jail’s Re-entry and Support Services Unit (supported by our Grants and Behavioral Health Units) and the individuals who sign up for the program have made it successful thus far. The vocational partnership with LiUNA has allowed Steven Wellemeyer, a recent program graduate and releasee from Santa Rita, and other program participants to learn new skills, develop expertise, and find purpose and accomplishment. The desired outcome is that this leads to increased well-being, reduced recidivism, and a stronger connection to society for program graduates upon release. The program has provided hope, so much so that some have petitioned the courts to extend their incarceration to complete it. Cohort 1 graduated from the 12-week program on April 29, 2024. A group of 20 began Cohort 2 the following week. Sheriff Sanchez understands that re-entry and support services are crucial in a person’s re-entry into society. It helps them rebuild their lives in a way that potentially reduces the burden on taxpayers and contributes to a more robust economy when people return to society with skills, certifications, and the confidence to seek employment. LiUNA is one of several programs (others offered, such as G.E.D. through Chabot College, Veterans Program, and more) provided at the Santa Rita Jail. Our goal is to empower incarcerated individuals to unlock their full potential and positively impact their communities.
