The Latest in Public Health: UC Berkeley Public Health research talks Heat stress and pregnancy outcomes Speaker: Brittany Bustamante, Postdoctoral fellow, UC Berkeley School of Public Health September 16, 2025 Electronic health records (EHR) are increasingly used in public health research, but they can introduce bias because they only capture individuals who seek care. This presentation describes an agent-based model (ABM) simulating healthcare-seeking behavior for community-acquired Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) infections in a California subregion. Assuming no true geographic differences in prevalence, the model tested whether observed disparities arose solely from differential healthcare-seeking behavior. This approach highlights how ABMs can help evaluate potential biases in EHR-based research and could be adapted to other diseases by modifying healthcare-seeking and disease progression parameters.
