It was recorded by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and his band, The Crypt-Kickers, and released in 1962. The story behind the song is just as entertaining as the song itself. Bobby Pickett was a struggling actor and singer who used to perform with a band at night. One evening, during a live show, he did a playful imitation of Boris Karloff, the actor famous for playing Frankenstein’s monster. The audience loved it — and that gave Pickett an idea. Together with songwriter Gary S. Paxton, Pickett decided to create a novelty song that mixed spooky fun with the rock ’n’ roll style of the early ’60s.
