Every downstroke followed by an upstroke! 0:19 Phase 2 - Triplets: A little faster now! Still using strict alternate picking, try squeezing 3 notes into each beat. The beat will now fall on opposing strokes each time. 0:36 Phase 3 - 16th Notes: Now even faster! 4 notes per beat. Give a slight accent to the first of every 4 pick attacks to have a better connection with the beat and a better sense of timing! 0:45 Phase 4 - Odd Groupings: Now we're playing a pattern of 3 notes but still playing 16th notes (4 notes per beat). This creates a cooler rhythm but can be challenging for the picking since the pattern starts on a different stroke each time! 1:03 Phase 5 - Scale Sequences: Now to make the fretting hand work a bit more, we're adding in little scale sequences across the single string. This is not only great for technique and hand synchronization, but also a great way to get to know your scales across a single string! 1:20 Phase 6 - Sequences In Odd Groupings: Taking those same sequences and patterns, we're now playing them in groups of 3 notes to create that same odd grouping effect from phase 4. 1:37 Phase 7 - Moving Between 2 Strings: To get our picking away from a single string, we're now moving across 2 strings while maintaining our strict alternate picking. This is a challenge for both hands! 1:55 Phase 8 - Moving Between Strings In Odd Groupings: Now we're taking the same odd grouping challenge but across 2 different strings! This might be the hardest one for the picking hand! 2:12 Phase 9 - Incorporating Legato: A very commonly neglected technique for most players to practice is Legato! This is how you build up the strength and competency of your fretting hand without relying on the picking hand to lead. Using hammer-ons and pull-offs to get the notes without picking them. This also creates a challenge for your picking to rest for the appropriate amount of time! 2:30 Phase 10 - Full Scale Sequences: Now for the ultimate hand synchronization exercise. Moving through a scale across multiple strings in a pattern of 3's. Each sequence is changing between the G Natural Minor Scale and the G Harmonic Minor scale to keep things interesting! 2:48 Phase 11 - Cool Down (16th Notes): Now we're coming back to our different rhythm subdivisions but in reverse! The goal is to transition between the different rhythms seamlessly without pausing (harder than it sounds!). 3:05 Phase 12 - Triplets: Again give a slight accent to each beat to help connect with the click! 3:22 Phase 13 - Eighth Notes: Feel the beat/click with every downstroke in this phase! 3:40 Phase 14 - Half Notes: Sometimes playing slowly (in time) can be harder than playing fast! Using a metronome, try to hit the note on every other beat as tightly with the beat as you can. Notice my hand still moving between beats in the video, this helps me maintain my sense of timing while "skipping" a beat. The final challenge of the whole thing is the ENDURANCE! Making your way through the entire thing in one go will help build the endurance especially for your picking hand! Hope you enjoyed this video!
