US risks 'significant geopolitical escalation' calling out Chinese maritime claims

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo labelling Beijing’s South China Sea claims as illegal could result in "significant geopolitical escalation" according to Sky News contributor Nicholas Reece. “China is wrong in it’s territorial claims around the nine-dash line, that’s the claim that extends their maritime area well into the South China Sea," Mr Reece said. The territorial expansion impacts Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and other south east Asian nations, he told Sky News host Chris Smith. Mr Reece pointed out there was an international court ruling in 2016 which supported the widely held view China does not control these waters. “I think the US is doing the right thing by stepping up on this," he said.
