Lama David Curtis of the Tibetan Language Institute teaches the Refuge and Heart of Awakening Prayer, a common Tibetan Buddhist prayer, translating each Tibetan syllable one at a time. The Refuge and Heart of Awakening Prayer, also known as the Refuge and Bodhicitta Prayer, is often the first prayer a Dharma student learns in Tibetan. Dharma practice begins with the taking of refuge in the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma and Sangha). This prayer then directs practitioners to cultivate compassion and the 6 Perfections until enlightenment. Studying this prayer word-by-word allows those reciting it to have a deeper connection to their lineage and to more deeply embrace the Refuge Vow.
