The first race he saw was a Formula 3 race in northern England at Charterhall Raceway in 1958. They discuss the golden age of endurance racing in the 1960s and how he slot raced a Chaparral 2F race car. He discusses seeing Chaparrals at Pebble Beach at the 100th Anniversary. David discusses being in banking prior to becoming a race car driver. David was willing to work in banking to help pay for racing. And he leveraged it into a career in trading commodities which gave him the money to race cars. Early banking was a different job when everything was done by hand and written down. They also talk about country club race tracks. David is part owner of Lime Rock Park where they recently built condos on the race track for car enthusiasts. His first race car was a Royale RP 16 Formula Ford that he bought with an insurance check he got from his stolen Lotus Elan. He towed it to the track in his Golf GTI with a trailer he bought from race car driver Dave Coyne. He got 21st in his first race and his first win was in Brands Hatch in Kent, England. He talks about racing against Bob Berridge and beating him. David talks about trying to juggle life, family and racing and how he was eventually burned out and took ten years off from racing. David and Stewart discuss the rise of historic racing and the joy of being able to see the cars you watched when you were young. He discusses beating pro drivers in some historic races. Stewart and David then discuss his famous Peugeot 908 race car with a diesel engine and how quickly he must shift it because you shift at only 4,000 RPM. This Peugeot 908 was the only diesel race car in the United States. He discusses the only problem they had with the car was a rubber bladder breaking which caused them to lose steering and the car was retired in 2020. David discusses the incredible G-Forces when driving a Formula One Car and the Peugeot 908 and how you have to trust the downforces. The guys discuss SIM Racing (Simulated Racing). He also discusses kids knowing the race car because they play Gran Turismo all the time and use it as their race car. He talks about an incredible thunderstorm hitting Daytona at 2:00 am when he was winning the race with professional driver Eric Foster on his tail. The power went out at the track and they weren’t able to turn on the red lights to stop the race, so they kept racing in an incredible rain storm in total darkness. It was the only time he drove the Peugeot in the rain and on slicks and it was a very scary experience. The also talk about the current state of Formula One Racing, the young rookie drivers as well as who is best in the world – Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri both of McLaren. Lando Norris is probably the fastest driver, but not as good of a driver. David tells Stewart about his car collection, specifically a Lotus Elan that he originally owned in England more than 50 years ago and recently bought it back after an auction site called to let him know it was for sale. He had to do a complete ground up restoration. Keith Martin of Sports Car Market Magazine joins the show to tell Stewart about the Porsche Club Tour through Oregon he participated in recently. There are 40 cars on the Porsche Club Tour that travel 1,500 miles through the hills of Oregon in 5 days. They start in Mount Hood, Oregon and travel through Leavenworth, Washington, Sandpoint, Idaho, Walla Walla, and eventually back home. They discuss how the tour is organized with meals and lodging. The costs of hotels and lodging has increased dramatically since Covid.
