Dr. Yogita Tailor, of PRM's Center of Excellence in Atlanta shares the relationship between endometriosis and the nerves of the body. At Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine™, we believe that the millions of women and men who suffer from pelvic pain should have access to care that provides relief. We don’t believe “a glass of wine will fix it” or that “it’s all in your head”. We will never abandon you – and from leadership to the front office to every pelvic pain specialist you meet, so much of our team has been in your shoes and believes the pelvic pain patient deserves better. This belief is what unifies us all at PRM. Since 2017, PRM has provided an innovative solution to a health crisis that affects 15% of women and 10% of men. Persistent pelvic pain is often overlooked, untreated, and misguided. At PRM, our mission is to decrease the time patients are suffering from pelvic pain symptoms. We offer a proprietary, simple, office-based procedure to treat the symptoms of chronic pelvic pain. The PRM Protocol™ consists of a series of pelvic nerve and muscle treatments to directly target inflammation in the pelvis and nerve pain. Depending on the condition causing your pelvic pain, other modalities may be needed in addition to our treatment. So, several ways that endometriosis can affect nerves and can lead to symptoms that include pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness as well. So one is direct involvement. So the endometriosis lesion can actually be very close to, or even infiltrating the nerve leading to pain. Common nerves that can get affected include the sciatic nerve. And with that, you can have symptoms radiating down the leg. You can have the obturator nerve be involved, which can lead to inner thigh pain and numbness or tingling, or the pudendal nerve, which can cause symptoms into the genitalia area. The perineal area or within the pelvic floor. Another way that endometriosis can affect the nerves is through inflammation. So, the endometriosis lesions can release inflammatory chemicals such as cytokines and prostaglandins that can irritate the nearby nerves leading to chronic pain. Also, if those lesions cause chronic inflammation. Those lesions could potentially become scar tissue or fibrose and that scar tissue can potentially trap or compress the nerves leading to pain. Another consideration is central sensitization. So when your body's been constantly in pain, the nervous system becomes rewired, making it overly sensitive. And that can cause pain to spread beyond even the original site and cause the body to Send messages back and forth between the pelvis and the brain to kind of constantly feel pain in a way called central sensitization. Another thing to remember is that our organs are surrounded by nerves. And so if those nerves become affected or irritated, it can also cause symptoms such as Bladder dysfunction, pain with urination, pain with a full bladder, also gastrointestinal symptoms such as constipation or pain with bowel movements.
