(19 Jun 1996) Spanish/Nat Hundreds of rubbish collectors have clashed with police in the Peruvian capital, Lima, for the second day running. The garbage men are protesting over plans to privatise rubbish collection in the downtown area. Several people were reported injured in the latest disturbances after police used sticks and a watercannon to disperse the demonstrating municipal workers. There were protests on the streets of Lima for the second day running Wednesday. Around one-thousand rubbish collectors in the Peruvian capital took to the streets once again to protest the government's plans to privatise their industry. They called an indefinite strike Tuesday over government plans to hand over Lima's rubbish collection to a Peruvian-Brazilian consortium that won the bidding last year. Lima's mayor, Alberto Andrade, said the new company would usher in newer, more modern equipment to clean streets and collect garbage. But there are fears that the new consortium will lay off up to one-thousand workers. The consortium - billed to take over trash collection on July 1 - said it plans to retain only 30 percent of the city workers. Wednesday's protest turned violent when protesters tried to enter the municipal palace, only to be met by police in riot gear. A spokesperson for city hall said police were simply trying to keep order in the city's main plaza. But some of the protesters were prepared to go to extreme lengths to make their point. VOXPOP: (Spanish) "How many mothers are hoping to find work so they can feed their children. It is not your mother Mr. Mayor. Every business likes money." While the rubbish collectors strike, the 450 tons of garbage that Lima produces daily will be hauled by temporary workers and garbage workers from nearby municipal districts.
