What to know about what is happening in Syria

Syrians celebrated in the streets Sunday after rebel forces seized control of the country's capital, Damascus. The move ended 50 years of the Assad family ruling the country. Syria's President Bashar Assad fled to Moscow, where he was granted asylum, Russian state media reported. Ahmad al-Sharaa, who went by the nickname he adopted, Abu Mohammed al-Golani, is the leader of the insurgency, and has called Assad's fall the birth of a new nation. Al-Sharaa, who was formerly linked to al-Qaida, now leads the rebel group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham or HTS. They say they now seek to build a functioning government.
