Welcome to the Online Spoken Faculty Development Program on Advanced Communication Laboratory Organized by the Department of ECE, PSNA College of Engineering and Technology, Dindigul - 624622, Tamilnadu, India. In this video course instructor Mrs.P.G.Akila, Assistant Professor/ECE elaborates Experiment No 10 - Characteristics of Directional Coupler The directional coupler is a passive device often used in many microwave circuits. It may be defined as a reciprocal, conservative, multiport junction that is reflectionless with all of its ports matched terminations. It has the following properties: (a) The power injected at a given point travels in only one direction. (b) The signals from the two channels are comparable in magnitude as well as phase. The power incident at port 1 i.e. input port is coupled to the main arm and not to the auxiliary arm. Similarly wave incident to the main arm is coupled to port 1 and not to the auxiliary arm. The directional couplers are used as a power monitoring device, measuring equipment, and checking the performance of microwave equipment. This experiment also discusses the characteristics behavior of the directional coupler.
