This video is part of the Emerald Wisdom collaboration between The Solar Living Institute and Sun+Earth Certified. Learn how Briceland Forest Farm uses a "crimping" technique for dealing with a cover crop without tilling up the soil. "Crimping" is an advanced farming trick for enhancing natural nutrient cycling without using a rototiller. In this video, beds were mulched in the fall and a cover crop mix of oats, bell beans, and vetch was seeded in. The crop is crimped in April and basically buried with compost, aged manure, and rotten straw. After about two weeks the cover crop underneath starts to decay and after 4-5 weeks the mulched beds are ready for a spring planting. No tillage allows for a fuller expression of soil macro and micro fauna - microbial life, and mycorrhizal associations -- all contribute to increased soil quality and plant health.
