Before Stalin became a god, he was just another Bolshevik — and Lev Kamenev was one of his closest allies. A revolutionary thinker, not a soldier, Kamenev believed the Revolution could be built with reason, not fear. He helped Lenin rise, trusted Stalin, and even supported him for power. But when Stalin turned loyalty into a death sentence, Kamenev became one of his first victims. In 1936, during the first Moscow Show Trial, Kamenev confessed to impossible crimes — not out of guilt, but to protect his family. Days later, he was executed in secret. His death marked the beginning of Stalin’s Great Terror — when friendship, loyalty, and truth became crimes against the state. Historical Context: Lev Kamenev: Bolshevik revolutionary and early Soviet leader. Helped Lenin seize power in 1917. Supported Stalin’s rise but later opposed his dictatorship. Arrested after Kirov’s assassination in 1934. Executed in the 1936 Moscow Show Trials — the first of Stalin’s purges. Rehabilitated posthumously in 1988.
