Have you ever wondered what happens under the lid of various video cassette recorders. I've lifted the lids on 7 different machines to show you how the video tape is loaded and unloaded. All the Sony formats (Betamax, Betacam, Video 8, Umatic) share a common loading system albeit with design differences such as clockwise vs anti clockwise loading. The VHS loading systems shows 2 types, fully loaded (VHS) vs half loaded (SVHS), the half-loaded position allows for CTL pulses to be read on the AC head without the tape being in full contact with the video drum assembly. In the half-loaded position, the tape sits against the AC head when in FF or REW modes. The tape is wrapped around the video head drum for playback and during picture search modes. Betamax is the only format where the actual upper drum doesn't rotate. There is a thin platter with the video heads mounted on it, this spins in between the upper and lower drum. DVCPRO, Mini DV and DVCAM are all almost identical as the tapes are interchangeable in certain machines. Betacam SP and Digital Betacam are also very similar as some DBC machines can play Beta SP tape. DVCPRO machines require a cassette adaptor to play back mini DV tape.
