#maple #syrup #releaser #sap Austin helps drill and tap the plastic manifold on a new maple sap releaser. Maple Sap production for the serious homeowner or commercial producer involves a vacuum tubing system. The vacuum pump connects to a releaser and the releaser distributes vacuum to the tubing system - and eventually to the tree. The releaser, sometimes called extractor, is a vessel that allows the tree sap to leave the tubing system while maintaining consistent vacuum to the tap hole. The techniques used today have greatly improved maple syrup yield. With a properly installed vacuum system - a half-gallon of maple syrup per tap is the expectation. Two types of releasers are available to the maple farmer. A mechanical releaser and an electric releaser. The double mechanical releaser utilizes the vacuum as the power source to operate. Each releaser contains vessels. called cannisters, that collect the sap in small volumes of 2 and as high as 40 gallon increments. The sap is captured in a cannister until a high limit is reached. A float triggers a dump cycle releasing Sap into an open atmosphere tank simultaneously switching collection to alternating cannisters. The mechanical releaser uses some cfm. (cubic feet minute) of the vacuum pump to operate. It does not require electricity to operate. An electrical releaser utilizes electricity. A vessel, a pump and control logic is used to separate the sap from the vacuum tubing system. To vacate a vessel under vacuum, a pump must be strong enough to overcome the vacuum on the suction end of the pump. Early electrical releasers utilized a centrifugal pump to pull sap under vacuum. As vacuum technology increased - higher vacuum levels were achieved. Submersible pumps have become the technology of choice to pump sap from a high vacuum system. Centrifugal pumps seals are not engineered to be under vacuum causing system leaks and eventual pump failure. Bissell Maple Farm operates multiple Sugarbush. The "home bush" has 2000 taps. The system utilizes an Atlas Copco DZS065 stainless steel dry claw vacuum pump. Two releasers are utilized to collect sap and two different locations. One double mechanical releaser on 500 taps and one Electric releaser on 1500 taps. www.bissellmaplefarm.com
