BEFORE THE GATES OF PARIS, 1870–1871 This song is told from the perspective of a German soldier during the Siege of Paris in the Franco-Prussian War. It does not glorify conquest, empire, or victory. It depicts warfare as it was conducted and endured: methodical, impersonal, prolonged, and shaped by logistics rather than heroics. The Siege of Paris was not defined by storming walls or decisive charges, but by encirclement, artillery pressure, and deprivation — a war of waiting, discipline, and calculated endurance. This track focuses on distance: between attacker and city, between command and consequence, between individual soldiers and the suffering they helped impose without ever seeing it directly. Decisions are made far from the trenches. Effects unfold slowly, relentlessly, and beyond personal control. AI was used in the creation of this project, including assistance with composition, lyrics, and visual material. The final arrangement, intent, and presentation remain human-directed. No triumph. No spectacle. Only patience, hunger, and history.
