How did the Protestant Reformation reshape everyday life beyond the church? In this talk, Issy Eley explores how the rise of Protestantism in early modern Europe transformed the moral and religious meanings of food, dining, and the domestic kitchen. Drawing on a range of material and cultural evidence — from religious imagery on posy trenchers to the repurposing of objects from dissolved Catholic institutions as tableware — the talk reveals how everyday practices such as saying grace before meals became increasingly important expressions of Protestant values. Together, these examples show how domestic spaces and routine acts of eating became powerful sites for reinforcing morality, faith, and social behaviour. Expanding on recent research into early modern dining culture, this session offers fresh insights into how religion shaped both the material world and lived experience at the table. N.B.
