Liquid Crystal Magic: The LCD Watch Story

Nothing screams retro like a classic digital watch LCD display. The comforting 7 segmented glowing numbers combined with the noble electroluminescent backlight is such an omnipresent thing - mass produced in its millions - that you may underestimate the excitement of the original discoveries of liquid crystal’s almost magical qualities and how amazing the level of innovation is that originally drove its use in flat panel displays and its production at insane scales. You’ll know of current advanced LCD tech in your latest big TV, smart phone and computer screen - all originating from its first use in watches and calculators - and we are now coming full circle with watches using OLEDs and in the future things such as Micro LED. We cover RCA labs initial work to develop LCD displays, the original applications within dynamic scattering mode (DSM) watches of Optel, Microma and Texas Instruments, as well as the Twisted Nematic or Field Effect LCD display of the Gruen Teletime and others. We have a slight detour into TFTs and active matrix with the Seiko TV watch and some other innovations like pseudo analog, double layered LCD, Super twisted nematic LCD and more recently memory in pixel (MLCD), OLED and Micro LED displays for watches. I hope you are electrically excited for this twisted thread of a story on the history of the LCD watch display.
