Backpacking with CJ Backpacking to Nuwaragala Mountain Nuwaragala mountain is situated in Maha Oya Divisional Secretariat in the Ampara District of the Eastern Province. It is a remnant mountain, belonging to the Gal Oya mountain range, which is located in half the plains of Sri Lanka. The height is 658 meters. This area is mostly inhabited by the Veddha community of Sri Lanka. It is said that an ancient group of people lived in the jungle called Heethala Vanni associated with this mountain. You can travel through many trails to this place and the most popular among those are from Maha Oya - Ampara road and Rambaken Oya valley through the Pollebedda Veddh village in the Mahaoya Divisional Secretariat Division in the Ampara District. All of them are very nature-rich trails including wonders created by ancient royal generations. On the top of the mountain, you can see Pettigala mountain, Savula Hela, Ethbedda, Walas Mountain, and Gal Oya mountains. Borupola Wewa, Rukam Wewa, Unnichchiya Wewa, Weligahakandiya Wewa, Nuwaragala Tenna Wewa, and Rambaken Oya Reservoir are clearly visible. It extends to the east coast of Sri Lanka. If you camp, you can see the sunrise clearly. The ruins of a large city can be seen on top of the rock called Nuwaragala. Some of the attractive remains are Maligathenna, the palace of King Saddatissa, the pond used by meditated Bikkhus, and the rock cave with ancient inscriptions used by the same Bikkhus. Now this area is roamed by the elephant herds, which can be seen in morning and evening sessions. Route: Mahiyanganaya -- Padiyathalawa -- Mahaoya -- 69 junction - Akul Oba [Kandy-Ampara Road]. From there, you have to walk about 04 km to the foothills. You have to climb another 2-3 km from the foot of the mountain.
