Remnants of the dark past and untold suffering of some American POWs and Filipino soldiers during World War II can be found in Plaza Cuartel. It is located along Taft Street in Barangay Liwanag just across from the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. The City developed the place into a public park where people can visit and take a time off under the shade of the big trees. It was built sometime in the 1940s. The historic Plaza Cuartel served as a garrison camp until the Philippines were invaded by the Japanese. It may look like an ordinary park but once you get to know its history, you'll never look at it the same way again. Many American and Filipino soldiers were burned to death in an underground tunnel under this park. Behind the steel bars is the narrow opening of the underground tunnel where soldiers were kept, starved, and burned alive. Many died but eleven of them survived the said massacre. Quite a history for just a small park. It is worth a visit when you travel to Puerto Princesa. #PlazaCuartel #PuertoPrincesa #Palawan
