Born into a fire-field farmer's family in Kim Hyong Gwon County, Ryanggang Province on August 24, Juche 6 (1917), Ri embarked on the road of anti-Japanese struggle when Korea was under Japan's colonial rule. After the country's liberation, he worked as a local party official. During the 1950-1953 Fatherland Liberation War, he was active as a war correspondent. He was arrested by the enemy while fighting as a guerilla in the area of Mt. Jiri, before serving 34-year-long prison term. Though he was put behind the bars for a long time, he did not abandon his faith and will, in order to honor the dignity as a member of the Workers' Party of Korea. In 1993, he was repatriated to the DPRK. At that time, he suffered from heavy illness, including heart disease, lung abscess, dyspnoea and verbal disorder, due to long-term prison life. Thanks to the loving care of President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il, he recovered his health and engaged himself in literary work to praise the greatness of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il. All of his works are enjoying a wide appeal to the people in the DPRK as masterpieces. He was awarded the title of DPRK Hero twice, the Order of Kim Il Sung and the National Reunification Prize for the feats he performed for the Party and the leader, the country and the people till the last moment of his life. The government erected Ri's bust in Thongil Street, Pyongyang and a documentary "Incarnation of Faith and Will" was produced. (KCNA) What Made Him Cross the Chol Pass? The Chol Pass standing in the eastern part of Korea is characterized by skyscraping sharp peaks, sheer cliffs and as many as 99 bends. The great leader Kim Jong Il crossed so steep a pass many a time in the daytime and at night, through rain and snow in the days of his Songun-based revolutionary leadership. Often recalling the Chol Pass in his lifetime, he would say: The rugged roads and high and low peaks of the Chol Pass are vivid in my eyes. I can see the whole area of the forefront as if seeing the palms of my own hands. Then what made him cross the Chol Pass time and again? In July Juche 90 or 2001 the great Kim Jong Il crossed the Chol Pass for the eighth time. It was too hot that day, and officials requested him not to cross the rugged pass again. Kim Jong Il read the wish of the people from the earnest request of the officials. He was lost in deep thought for a while, and said: I also know well that the pass is steep and rugged. Of course I know that a moment´s slip may throw us down the deep precipice. But I cross the Chol Pass time and again because my beloved soldiers are defending the defence lines of the country across the pass, waiting for the Supreme Commander. Do you know what they are thinking of when they keep vigil, watching the enemy´s position, their bellies on the frozen earth? Thinking of the Supreme Commander, they are firmly defending the forefront post, standing the freezing cold and steaming heat. How can I sit with folded arms without calling on them frequently? I can never remain an onlooker.... His sincere speech warmed up the hearts of all present there. Representing the will of the Korean people, the title of Generalissimo of the Democratic People´s Republic of Korea was awarded to the great Songun commander Kim Jong Il on February 14, Juche 101 or 2012, who devoted his all to national defence and people´s happiness, crossing and recrossing the Chol Pass.
