The Fairey Barracuda started life in the early 1930s as a genuinely advanced monoplane design — low wing, powerful Fairey P.24 engine, excellent carrier characteristics. By the time the Air Ministry was done with it, the wing had moved to the top, the engine had been swapped for an underpowered Merlin, and the landing gear looked like something from a fever dream. Marcel Lobelle and his team at Fairey spent nearly ten years reworking the design to satisfy ever-changing official requirements. The result flew, fought, and even scored hits on the Tirpitz — but never came close to what it could have been.
