Benigoi is a variety that has a solid red color. In my bowl I have both normal ‘Benigoi’ and also ‘Ginrin Benigoi’. Now ‘gin’ means the luster, and ‘rin’ means scale. So ginrin literally stand for shiny scales. And you can spot that easily of course. Want to know more about body formation? Watch this very detailed guide about Shiro Utsuri, where I cover most body aspects: • How to select a good Shiro Utsuri [Detaile... These Benigoi are from the Maruhiro Koi Farm. Maruhiro does breed some other one coloured Koi as well. His Chagoi for example almost always have a really nice net pattern, which is really likeable! Also he surely is known for the Benigoi variety as well. Shimi’s on Benigoi: If you live in a country with harder water, it is really likely that benigoi can and will start to develop small black spots. We call these shimi’s. There is nothing wrong with these, but... the only point is that is doesn’t look nice on your Koi! Besides cosmetic surgery, which I do not recommend at all, there is not really an option to stop Shimi's from developing on your benigoi. What you can often see is that during warmer temperatures the shimi’s disappear, and will come back again when the temperatures gradually lower in autumn and winter. So what aspects do you want to take into account when you select a Benigoi? Honestly there are not a lot of factors. Because of course you don’t have to pay attention to the pattern. There are some characteristics you can take into account though. That starts with a solid red color. Your Benigoi should have the same intensity of red all over the entire Koi. Make sure all the scales are nicely placed, all have the same intensity of pigmentation. When your Koi has ginrin, it should have a solid thick layer of ginrin when you look right from above. Four of five rows of gin rin scales. Furthermore actually the most important criteria to select on are body formation. You want your benigoi to be torpedo looking when it is young. The want a strong tail and thick tail area. Not only thick from above, but also the height of the tail is really important. I will keep saying this as many people only look for the width of the last part of the tail. You want the backbone or Jitai to be visible. Consider to subscribe if you enjoyed this video.
