Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest health threats of our time, causing 33,000 deaths every year in the European Union. Around 70% of antibiotics sold globally are used in food-producing animals, and preventative treatments remain common in farming. This overuse contributes to the spread of resistant bacteria that can reach people through food, direct contact, and the environment. The EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) accounts for one-third of the EU budget and has the potential to reduce antibiotic use in farming. Yet today, only a small share of livestock benefits from measures addressing antimicrobial resistance. This video explains why CAP reform matters for public health - and how smarter funding can help keep antibiotics working.
