However, the crisis would end in controversy after the notorious Russian Spetsnaz deployed an unknown gas into the theater– to incapacitate the rebels, before executing their rescue mission. The Russian government faced significant scrutiny, both domestically and internationally, for its handling of the situation. While the operation successfully neutralized the immediate terrorist threat, the high civilian casualty toll cast a long shadow over the outcome.
