Why did Hashem bring darkness upon the Egyptians and then miraculously made it light for the Jews instead of temporarily blinding the Egyptians like the People of Sedom? Chasam Sofer explains that when someone is blind his other four senses become sharper because the energy that would normally go into the sense of sight is diverted to the other sences. Conversely, when someone who can see is in the dark his sense of sight works, but because there isn’t light, he has to strain his eyes in order to see, and his eyes use more energy than usual. His other senses don’t become sharper. Hashem struck the Egyptians with darkness and not blindness because He didn’t want the Egyptians to benefit from having their other four senses improve. What is the midah k’neged midah (measure for measure) of the makah (plague) of darkness? The pasuk says “there was a thick darkness throughout the land of Egypt.” Tanna D’bei Eliyahu Raba (See Parshas Va’eira): explains that everything that transpired during the process of the redemption from Egypt was in some form midah k’neged midah (measure for measure) for what the Egyptians did to us. The question arises, what is the midah k’neged midah of the plague of darkness? What did the Egyptians do to the Jews that caused them to deserve darkness come upon them? 1) Rav Elyashiv Zt’l explains that it was because of what Pharoah answered Moshe and Aharon. They came to Pharoah saying that Hashem said to send the Jews out. Pharoah asked “who is Hashem that I should listen to Him.” He also rudely asked if Moshe had seen God. Moshe answered that he heard Hashem’s voice. Since Paroah claimed that Moshe never actually saw God, the Egyptians were punished by not being able to see. 2) Kli Chemda answers differently and explains that it was due to the fact that the Egyptians made the Jews work, not only all day, but during the night as well. Therefore, darkness was brought upon them as punishment for making the Jews work at a time of darkness. 3) Shach says it was because they darkened the hearts and the eyes of the Jews from serving Hashem, so their lives were darkened. 4) Interestingly, Ohel Aryeh does not quote Kli Yakar’s answer. Kli Yakar answers that the Egyptians were punished with the plague of darkness because they caused the Jews to hide their children in darkness. A fascinating side point is that both the Tanna D’bei Eliyahu Raba and the Midrash Tanchuma which explain the measure for measure behind every plague, do not give an explanation for darkness.
