Reproducing an Utagawa Kuniyoshi design from Edo Japan for our August print available below: . https://www.brandonjohnsonstudio.com . My name is Brandon Johnson and I am an 'artist' outside of Chicago, IL. I work in a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, etc, however within the last year or so I have caught the printmaking bug. Rarely has a day gone by over the last year and a bit without either designing, carving, or printing. This video is documenting the entire process of creating a Japanese woodblock print, starting with the finalized design and ending with a fully realized print! I started this year off with working on a dragon print by Kuniyoshi as it seemed to be the right choice, albeit a tad cliche, as it was the year of the dragon. However, now that we are a little over half way through said year, I thought it would be fun to tackle another Kuniyoshi dragon. I figured this would give me a good sense for how my skills are progressing when it comes to both printing and woodcarving. I am happy to report that I believe both are moving forward in a good way! Hopefully, I am one step closer to getting a handle on this mokuhanga craft! The next print is set to be completed by this October and then we will round out the year with a truly spectacular print! Initially, these videos weren't supposed to be so focused on the more ASMR aspects, but I have found that I truly love the soundscape of a printers studio. I think this was a similar situation that David Bull ran into in his own videos, where many people came just to enjoy the sounds. This video is full of the different sounds that make up the wood block printmaking process. There are gentle paper sounds with light tapping and scratching. There is the pleasant wood carving sounds with their light pops and crackles, and then the more vigorous printmaking sounds with their rubbing and brushing sounds. I really find the overall mood that these sounds produce to be quite nice. The next video will likely focus on a painting or drawing, but I am not quite sure which. I want to start challenging myself a little more with my video making and editing, so I am going to try to experiment a little bit. I hope everyone enjoys, as it has been a while since the last time I put together a full video like this. . Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brandonjohn... .
