This is going to be a video series (VIDEO # 9 Long Version) about an impacted canine getting a braces treatment at Tooth Time Family Dentistry! When a tooth fails to emerge through the gums, it is considered to be an impacted tooth. This commonly occurs in the case of canine teeth. It is important to treat an impacted tooth in order to prevent the improper eruption of nearby teeth, cyst formation, possible infection or other negative changes in the jaw. In order to determine the correct treatment for you, your dentist will examine your teeth and radiographs to determine the position of the impacted tooth as well as the condition of your gums. One of the treatment options is to surgically expose the tooth in order to guide it to the right position in your jaw. In most cases, you will need to have space created in your jaw through orthodontics prior to the surgical treatment. The conventional treatment approach of an impacted canine is to expose the crown of the canine surgically, followed by bonding an attachment onto the crown surface. The attachment is ligated to the arch wire in the mouth, and the tooth can be pulled out with elastics. Making the impacted canines reach their final position can take from a few months to more than one year. How common are impacted canines? About 2% of the population have an impacted upper canine usually affecting one side only. Most of these impact towards the roof of the mouth (the 'palate') but some impact towards the cheek.
