Approaching from the mouth of the Thames River, the channel opens into Long Island Sound before winding north past the city of New London. Moving upriver, the shoreline shifts from civilian docks and neighborhoods to the sprawling expanse of Naval Submarine Base New London. From higher above, the base spreads along the east bank of the river. Rows of sleek black hulls line the piers—Los Angeles and Virginia class submarines moored side by side, a visible lineage of more than fifty years of undersea warfare. Behind them lie schools, simulators, and training facilities preparing sailors for the “silent service.” Across the river, General Dynamics Electric Boat dominates the waterfront, the shipyard that has produced every nuclear-powered submarine from Nautilus to today’s Virginia class. At the riverfront, the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) lies permanently moored. Preserved as both a museum ship and National Historic Landmark, she marks the place where the nuclear Navy was born. Seen from above, the landscape ties past to present—historic innovation alongside the cutting edge of American sea power.
