This episode introduces Kien-On Zhang, who makes Hakka lion heads. Zhang, currently 78 years old, started to learn lion dance when he was 17. Almost in his 80s, Zhang is still participating in tours and teaching classes on the making of Hakka lion heads and lion dance, hoping to pass down this culture so that more and more people will want to help continue and promote this culture. The Hakka lion head is round with a rectangular mouth and a pig nose. The "王(Wang)" character on the forehead is different from that on a Min or Guangdong lion head. In his younger years, Zhang did lion dance with his uncles to stay fit. He then learned how to make lion heads, including hand modeling, carving, casting, woodworking, and coloring the traditional patterns. The Hakka lion head, the only lion head allowed in a Hakka temple, is used to perform in front of the deities at the temple square, allowing local residents to experience a magnificent and vibrant moment together. During a traditional festival, lion and dragon dance is indispensable. Amidst the festival atmosphere, people tend to neglect the details of the lion head. Yet, the Hakka lion head is unique! Every pattern has a different meaning, indicating Hakka people’s respect for deities and their earnest prayers. More importantly, the tradition of the Hakka lion dance began when early Hakka settlers tried to stay fit to fight for their homes by practicing lion dance. In practice, the tradition is imbued with a strong Hakka spirit. The Hakka lion dance is a unique form of art that combines martial arts, dance, theatre, and music. This episode hopes to introduce to more people about the uniqueness of the Hakka lion dance. To promote the public's awareness of Hakka cultural assets, and pass on Hakka culture and spirit, this documentary series showcases the ecology of all walks of life and the cultural works of Hakka ethnicity in Taiwan, by recording the traditional Hakka skills and craftsmen's selfless and silent contributions in a sustainable manner. Presented by: Hakka Public Communication Foundation (HPCF)
