Sunderland head Coach Claire Robinson insisted her players deserved all the plaudits as they wrapped up the FA Women's Super League 2 title with a final day victory at Millwall Lionesses. Knowing second-placed Doncaster Rovers Belles were waiting to pounce on any errors, the Black Cats could afford no slip ups if they were to clinch first place in the maiden Super League season. But goals from Kelly McDougall, Rachel Furness, Keira Ramshaw and Abbey Joice ensured Sunderland achieved promotion to WSL 1, subject to meeting off-field licensing requirements. Robinson said: “I’m feeling elated, it’s fantastic. All credit to the girls, I dedicate it to them and I couldn’t have asked anything more of them. “It’s been a long season for them and to do it on the last day is fantastic. “To be honest, I didn’t really look at the Doncaster score, it was all about what we were doing. We needed the second goal to make it comfortable. “All four goals were fantastic, but the second one stood out as it was a building block to move the game on and we were more or less in control after that. “We didn’t come here expecting to win, we knew that we had to work hard to get that result and the girls showed their quality. “I attribute our success to the players. They’ve done the hard work. Everyone in the staff and the board have played their part in it as well. Millwall coach Dan Mlinar succeeded Alberto Kurti in the final weeks of the season and has been encouraged by an upturn in performances since taking the helm. However, he admitted his team were powerless to stop Sunderland being crowned worthy champions. He said: “This season was difficult at times, we had a good start but petered out towards the end of the season. Myself and Les Briley took charge for the last four games and that saw a rise in performances. “The whole first half was a positive, the difference in the first half was one or two moments of magic from Sunderland. From our goalkeeper up to our final third we matched them, we worked hard and I thought it was a very even game first half and then in the second half they just dominated and took control and there was not much we could do. “Sunderland were worthy champions, they’re a good side and in the second half they really showed why they’re up there.” Millwall(4-4-2): Quantrill; Strugnell, Davies, Cole, Mackie, Maple, Sherwood, Billson, Ali, Cowan, Agg.
