Inside This Museum’s Collection Of Dead Birds

A behind-the-scenes look at the Royal Ontario Museum’s ornithology collection rooms. Comprising of well over 100,000 bird skins, and tens of thousands of skeletons and eggs, this is one of the most complete collection of bird specimens anywhere in the world. Having previously worked and volunteered at the ROM, I was shocked when I learned how much of the museum’s objects and specimens were not on display to the public, but locked away in storage rooms. Wanting to get a glimpse into this hidden collection, I met with Dr. Santiago Claramunt, the Associate Curator of Ornithology at the ROM, who gave us an inside look at this expansive collection.
