Convert the mini USB on a GoPro Hero 3, 3+, 4 into a microphone input! ► All the gear is linked below*. It's hard to say if you'd even want to put an external microphone into GoPro but if you do, now you can! I'm quite surprised that you can do this by converting a 3.5mm microphone lead to USB. I don't know if this is something special about the mini USB input on the GoPro but it really makes me wonder what other cameras this might work on! Stay tuned;) In this case I used the **AspenMics mono lavalier microphone. It's important to note that AspenMics says this adapter is for use specifically with the GoPro Hero 3, 3+ and 4. Other GoPro models have not been tested and may not work. In the GoPro you don't get any control over the audio levels, it's all auto gain and the lav mic ran pretty hot, peaking somewhere between -6db to -3db. I normalized the audio to -16LUFS. No other processing was applied and you can hear the noise floor is relatively low. This was lit only with natural daylight coming through the windows. I color graded the footage in Adobe Premiere Pro CC using the Lumtri presets which seem to have been upgraded perhaps since the addition of Adobe Speedgrade. The results are fantastic, easy color grading and I was really surprised how good the shots with the Tokina lens (wide angle, talking head that wasn't GoPro) took to the color grading. Looked even better than the b-roll footage shot on Canon L glass (talking head at the end of the video where I talk about the results of this mic. adapter).
