DGA Latino Summit 2023 | Director's Spotlight: Guillermo del Toro and Fede Alvarez

Rounding out an eventful day of learning and sharing, acclaimed Directors Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio) and Fede Alvarez (Panic Attack!, Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe, The Girl in the Spider’s Web) had an intimate one-on-one conversation where the two visionaries discussed their illustrious careers and offered wisdom on navigating Hollywood as a Latino creative. Del Toro spoke of the unseen importance success has on continuing to open the door for more representation to make way and his admiration for Alvarez’s “disobedience” in the way he utilizes subversion in his filmmaking. Alvarez shared insights into his upbringing under a repressive dictatorship in Uruguay that limited his early access to cinema, as well as his work with colleague Ridley Scott on the production of the upcoming feature, Alien: Romulus. Both Directors discussed the drought of filmmakers originating from Uruguay and how Alvarez has attempted to find more natives from his home country to work with him on his features.
