Soldier holding book open, zoom in to Queen's words and signature STORYLINE: Britain's Queen Elizabeth II arrived in Turkey with her husband on Tuesday for their first visit to the country in 37 years. The trip is designed to underscore her country's strong support for Turkish membership in the European Union. For four days the Queen and Prince Philip will see some of Turkey's most revered national monuments as well as religious and cultural traditions, highlighting Britain's good relations with the mostly Muslim nation. Britain has backed Turkey's bid to join the EU, and the Queen will highlight that support, British Ambassador Nick Baird said. Turkey began EU membership talks in 2005, but progress has been slow over disagreements on divided Cyprus and opposition from some European countries. Following her arrival, Queen Elizabeth rode in a black limousine to the mausoleum of modern and and secular Turkey's founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and laid a wreath at the tomb - a tradition expected of all visiting dignitaries. "It's an honour to pay my respects to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, a much beloved friend of the United Kingdom and one of the great figures of modern history," she wrote in the visitor's book at the mausoleum. On Tuesday evening, the Queen will attend a banquet hosted by President Abdullah Gul. The royal couple also plan to visit Istanbul and the western city of Bursa - once an Ottoman city and now home to Turkey's automotive and textiles industries. In Bursa, the Queen will attend a traditional Ottoman shadow puppet show, a fashion show and visit a mosque to listen to Koranic recitals. The Queen and Prince Philip last visited Turkey in 1971.
